Mice in Attic Insulation
Scratch. Scratch. Squeak!
We receive dozens of calls each year for a strange and increasingly common issue. Mice in the attic. The problem doesn't seem to be limited to old homes. Quite the contrary. Many of the problems occur in new homes as well. The symptoms are always the same. A homeowner hears something scratching around up in the attic, the call us and we perform an inspection.
Attic Mice Inspection
We we have access to the attic we inspect using basic tools such as headlamps and cameras. We often also bring our infrared camera along as well. The IR cameral allows us to see mouse pathways from the rooms below because their tunnels create areas in the insulation bed where the insulation has been displaced. This doesn't always work but when it does, the results are compelling.
After the Inspection
So, what do you do when you find mice in your attic? There are a few options. The least appealing is to do nothing. The problem is that mice multiple quickly and leaving them alone to breed with impunity can make a small problem a very big problem. Mice burrow around through attic insulation, leaving scat and destruction behind. The other option is to set traps and cross your fingers. With aggressive management traps can reduce or eliminate a population of mice in the attic but it's not likely to get them all.
